Everything You Need To Know To Find Your New Best Friend!
The Souris Valley Animal Shelter (SVAS) strives to match people with animals; animals that fit their lifestyles and personalities. We take our mission seriously, devoting the time and energy it takes to find responsible homes filled with love. Furthermore, staff members are knowledgeable and can direct families towards the right match. Each animal offers a wonderful and unique quality; come visit us, we have just what you need in a companion.
We offer a wide selection of cats and dogs which are listed under Pet Finder, Pet Match Program, Foster Program, and Special Needs Pets. However, if we can’t fulfill your needs, we encourage you to fill out a want list application and check with us regularly.
Finally, we are unable to hold animals via phone, fax or e-mail. However, you can start the adoption process by filling out an application on line, that way; it’s complete before you visit. After all, you might meet your new best friend the day you visit and a completed application means taking the pet that very day!

Before You Adopt
Make sure everyone in your family understands the commitment of owning a pet. Additionally, if you rent, landlords are required to sign a contract agreeing to the adoption. In certain cases, all family members will need to meet the new pet.
Adoption Procedures
- Adopters must be at least 18 years old. Adopters under 18 must have their parent’s/guardian’s consent.
- If the adopter has a child less than 6 years of age at home, the animal must be at least 4 months old. This is for both the safety of the child and the animal.
- If you are considering the responsibility of adopting a pet, you will be expected to spend time with your new pet. All adoptions require at least one visit prior to adoption. Sorry, no exceptions. This is for the benefit of both you and the animal. Walking, playing, or generally interacting with the animal can help ensure the pet is the right choice. Remember, you're adopting a new family member!
- Completing a Pre-Adoption Application is the next step. Pre-Adoption Applications are reviewed by SVAS Customer Service Representative or Shelter Manager to determine if approval is in best interest of the animal and the family. We ask for 24-48 business hours to process applications.
- If approved, you will be required to read and sign an Adoption Contract. SVAS requires all animals be spayed or neutered. There are no exceptions. If not already spayed or neutered, it is the adopter's responsibility to spay or neuter within a given timeframe mentioned at the time of adoption. All adopters are given copies of the signed documents, a receipt, and literature. And let’s not forget your new pet.
- Adoptions are not first-come, first-serve or held for application approval. We strive for permanent adoptions and place animals in homes best suited for them and the new family.
- On site dog/cat introductions are offered. We encourage this practice, as many times new pets are not welcome additions by other pets living in the household.
- Payment accepted: Cash, Check, Visa, or MasterCard
- Out of state adoptions: All out of state applications are handled on a case by case basis. However, the SVAS requires that all pets traveling to out-of-state residences be spayed or neutered before leaving our facility. In addition, if the pet needs to be shipped, the SVAS is willing to work with potential adopters.
